BOBBY Charlton and Johnny Giles were in Dublin yesterday to pay tribute to former Busby Babe Billy "Liam" Whelan. The Republic of Ireland legend, who died in the Munich air disaster, had a bridge in Dublin renamed in his honour following huge community support.
The bridge at Connaught Street and Fassaugh Street will now be known as the Liam Whelan bridge following the unveiling of the plaque by Dublin's Lord Mayor, Vincent Jackson. Whelan's three sisters and two brothers attended the ceremony and his brother Christy spoke of the presence of world-class footballers as a great tribute to his brother
"It is very fitting that this community honour a local man such as Liam Whelan whose career was tragically cut short by the Munich Air Disaster. I am delighted to be part of this commemorative occasion" said the Lord Mayor.
