Munich Remembered - and Never Forgotten

On 6th February 1958 the airliner carrying players and backroom staff of Manchester United, plus a number of journalists and supporters, crashed in a blizzard on its third attempt to take off from Munich airport. United were returning from Belgrade where they had just beaten Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup and had stopped off at Munich for re-fuelling. Twenty-three of the forty-four passengers on board the aircraft lost their lives.

The Official Remembrance Ceremony - 6 Feb 2008

February 6th 2010

An hour before kick-off over 1000 fans gathered under the Munich Plaque to sing The Flowers of Manchester and Fifty Years. Thanks to Stretford End Flags for the organising the PA system (it was actually provided by United) and thanks as always to Pete Martin for leading the singing. I've uploaded some photos to my other site TheFlowersOfManchester.co.uk

Are you visiting Munich?

Supporter Jason Clarke has kindly provided directions and a map to both memorials - see the Memorials page.

Graves

I have had a number of requests for information regarding the whereabouts of the victims' graves. Therefore the site now includes a graves section.

Duncan Edwards

Although eight players died in the crash, one name stands out above all the others - Duncan Edwards. For more information about the United legend, please visit our Duncan Edwards Tribute site.

Photos

It has become a tradition for fans (including myself) to visit Old Trafford on Feb 6th each year to pay their respects to those who perished in the crash. Photos from the past few years, as well as the fan's tribute at Munich in 2008 can be found on TheFlowersOfManchester.co.uk
