munich58.co.ukIn memory of those who died in the munich air crash in February 1958 |
A plaque and clock in memory of those who died were erected at Old Trafford. Both were unveiled on 25th February 1960. The plaque was unveiled by Matt Busby and the clock by Dan Marsden, Chairman of the Ground Committee. The Club paid for the plaque and the Ground Committee paid for the clock.
The original Munich plaque was placed above the old Directors Entrance (South Stand tunnel) but was too fragile to move during ground redevelopments made in the mid 1970s. The club decided to keep it in its original place, however it is no longer possible to see it as it has become part of the building work of Old Trafford.
The plaque, which currently resides high up on the United Road corner of K Stand, is actually the third one - the first one is the one which was not possible to move, the second one which replaced it is currently in store (and will be relocated to the Museum soon). No damage was done to the original plaque when the stadium redevelopment work was done. The third plaque was unveiled in 1996.
The clock is on the other corner of K Stand - near the photographers and disabled entrance. Contrary to popular opinion, the clock is NOT fixed to show 3.04 (the time of the crash).
In May 2005 - due to the building work, the Munich plaque has been moved to the South East quadrant of Old Trafford. Also in 2005, United fanzine Red News published an article about the history of the plaque - read a transcript of it here.
